Isa was the final Messenger Allah sent to earth before
Muhammad (PBUH), who was the last Prophet. Jesus was the Messiah and one of the
greatest Prophets in Islam. Muslims don’t assign divinity to him like the
Christians, nor do we reject him the way the Jews do. Jesus was sent with the
same teachings of monotheism as the other Prophets of God.
The Miracles Allah granted Jesus
There were
many miracles in Isa’s life. His birth was a miracle, as his mother Maryam was
a virgin, and he had no father. His creation was similar to that of Adam, as
stated in Surah Ali ‘Imran. He performed miracles by Allah’s leave, such as the
miracle of his speaking when he was a mere baby. The most miraculous aspect of
Isa’s life is that Allah raised him, and he will return before the Last Day.
Jesus was not crucified as people from other religions believe. On the contrary, as we learn in Surah
An-Nisa, someone else was made to resemble him.
Prophet Isa
(A.S) and the bird
Prophet ‘Issa (A.S) was one of the Prophets sent to
the Bani Israil. He was given the miracle of curing the sick, healing the blind
and bringing the dead back to life with the permission of Allah (S.W.T). Some
people believed in him but others did not.
Those who followed Prophet ‘Issa (A.S) were persecuted
and harassed.
The Jewish Rabbis did not believe in Prophet ‘Issa
(A.S) even though he showed them exactly where the Tawrat had been altered.
They were very stubborn and refused to listen.
One of the
Jewish Rabbis, told him, “If you really are a Prophet, then take some clay from
the ground, mould it in the shape of a bird and bring the bird to life in front
of us and all the people. We will then believe in you.”
Prophet ‘Issa
(A.S) took some clay, mixed it with water and moulded it to the shape of a
bird. The believers prayed for his success while the disbelievers prayed that
he would fail.
After making the
bird, Prophet ‘Isa (A.S) held it in his hand and prayed to Allah to give life
to the bird. By the power of Allah (S.W.T), his prayer was answered. It became
a real bird and flew away. The believers were happy and the disbelievers were
shocked, but they still refused to believe.
Jesus is a Slave of Allah
As we
discover in Surah Maryam, Jesus declared that he’s Allah’s slave. Slavery has negative connotations among humans
since one who is called a slave is generally seen as being of lowly status. On the other hand,
when one is called a slave or servant of Allah, it cannot be interpreted in the
same context. Considering that Allah is the Omnipotent God, and the Creator of
everything in existence, it is merely common sense that mankind consists of His slaves.
None of the
Prophets should be
deified, as they were all humans. They were, in fact,
the best of Allah’s servants.
They enjoined good and forbade evil while submitting to Allah and obeying Him. We should all aim to be devoted servants of Allah and obey God at all times.
It’s Necessary to Follow the Revealed Scriptures
Jesus
stated in Surah Maryam that Allah had given him the Scripture as well as making
him a Prophet. Following the Prophets and the Scriptures Allah sent them with
is necessary. As we
learn in Surah Al-Maidah, Jesus brought the Injil, which confirmed the Torah that came before it. While
earlier nations had revealed Scriptures they were obliged to follow; mankind is
now obligated to follow the final revelation, the Holy Quran,
which is binding upon all of humanity. Following the Quran and Sunnah is a must
for every believer.
Issa’s Story Shows the Importance of Fulfilling
Obligatory Duties
After
mentioning his Prophethood in Surah Maryam, Jesus also mentioned prayer and
charity, which are obligatory duties. Muslims thereby learn that it is
not enough to have faith, but one must also act on his faith by carrying out
one’s compulsory duties. Indeed, Isa (AS), despite being a Prophet who was
superior to ordinary believers, also realized the importance of fulfilling obligations.
Jesus Reminded us of the Importance of Fearing Allah
In Surah Ali ‘Imran, Isa affirmed that he came with a sign
from Allah and told people to fear Allah. He emphasized the importance of
fearing Allah. All believers should fear Allah in their actions and avoid evil
deeds that would displease the One they fear.
Follow the Straight Path by Worshiping and Obeying Allah
As we learn in Surah Ali ‘Imran, in order to be on the
straight path, we need to worship Allah. If we look at Isa’s life (Lessons from
Isa Life), we see that he was on the straight path. Indeed, believers must
worship Allah alone and remain obedient to Him to stay on the straight path.
